SUNSETS WHILE ON SAFARI

Our favorite sunset views in East Africa are in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania because we travel quite a bit and spend the majority of our time guiding and exploring the bush. The Masai Mara, Murchison falls and Serengeti National Park have been the two that stand out the most; however, other national parks provide unique vantage points on the sunset. Tanzania has the Serengeti, whereas Kenya has the Masai Mara and Uganda has Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls. The Serengeti and Masai Mara are still where you will experience the best moments.

Sunset in Maasai mara: One of Kenya’s most popular national parks is the Masai Mara National Reserve. The vast grasslands scattered with riverine forests and acacias covering the Savannah are distinctive features of the Masai Mara. Kenya lies on the equator, so the days and nights there are essentially the same. The optimum time to photograph the sunrise is between 0615 and 0630, when the sun will set, before it becomes too light. Between 0620 and 0630 hours for the sunset. But depending on the time of year, these timings could change a little. For instance, in January and February, the sunrise is roughly the same time earlier and the sunset is about a half-hour later.

A zoom lens would be ideal for this image in order to make the sun appear more prominent and have a greater impact on the final product.

Using the Live View feature on the camera is a key approach to capturing images of the sunset or sunrise. The light from a zoom lens or a normal camera would make it exceedingly difficult on the eyes to look at the sun.
