Honeymoon in Ruaha National Park in 2026
Thinking of a remote destination far from the crowd to spend your post-marriage holiday? It may be a daunting task to decide where you should go. Lucky for you, because we are here to help. Ruaha is one of our favorite spots when it comes to secluded safaris like that of a newlywed couple. In this article, we explore your next romantic escape, Ruaha National Park, and why you should visit it in 2026. Let’s explore.
Nestled in the remote southern part of Tanzania, Ruaha boasts a diverse array of habitats – ranging from grassland savannahs, miombo woodlands, acacia savannahs, and riverine forests. Its vast wilderness spans about 20,226 square miles (7,800 square miles), making it the second largest park in Tanzania. The wildlife, the vegetation, and the birdlife are at their prime. And that’s why we’ve picked this pristine park for a honeymoon safari.
What to do in Ruaha for Newlyweds
Game drive.
Every drive in Ruaha is an adventure. Honeymooners can just hop into a private safari vehicle and explore the pristine forests while meeting few to no visitors. We know how expensive it might be to hire a private game drive in the Serengeti and other destinations in the north. But in this park, even an ordinary drive feels private because you’ll watch wildlife alone.
The drive takes it slowly for you to capture some shots in the pristine forests. You watch large elephants move past you as they gently march toward the Ruaha River. On another sighting, a lion stalks a graceful antelope in the wooded section of the park. You may also find spotted hyenas, wildebeest, zebras, leopards, and painted dogs.
Boat ride.
This trip takes its course along the majestic Rufiji River. Enjoy those beautiful moments of watching large pods of hippos basking in the sun. Their companions, large Nile crocodiles, also never stay far from the pool.
Boat rides are a signature of Ruaha National Park and are rarely offered in most northern parks (except Lake Manyara). Surrounding the Great Ruaha River are fantastic trees that create riverine forests. River birds like kingfishers, herons, storks, and African skimmers are a common sighting.
Walking safari.
A guided nature walk is an amazing way to connect with nature in the African jungle. Picture that hand-in-hand walk: you touch flowers, listen to melodious love songs from singing birds, and explore plants.
Couples can walk around the camp or go for a long walk far from the camp. This walk always ends up with a picnic lunch in a serene setting. A safari vehicle will pick you up from the wilderness and take you back to the camp.
Fly camping.
We suggest you should not miss this one-of-a-kind experience. Brought to you by your camp, this allows you to spend one or two nights away from the lodge or camp. A simple fly tent is set in a remote location, ready for your wonderful sleep under a million stars.
Still wondering on the “fly”? Worry not, we’ll explain. The term ‘fly camping’ originates from old-school hunters on their search for game for a hunt. They spent their nights in a simple fly sheet, designed to protect them from rain and sun.
So, your tent will be simple and transparent to allow you to gaze at the African stars. You will also hear ripples, rustles, and roars of lions as you fall asleep. Wake up at dawn to catch a beautiful sunrise and enjoy a stunning bush breakfast.
Birdwatching.
Sometimes birds go unnoticed because many visitors focus on large game. But honeymooners love these small flying creatures. And the good news is that Ruaha is home to over 500 bird species.
Gaze at endemics (to Tanzania) like the ashy starling, red-billed hornbill, and yellow-collared lovebird. You can spot other birds like masked weaver, white-crowned lapwing, white storks, ostriches, and many others.
