This national park covers a total surface area of about 321 square kilometers and it is a home to over 400 endangered mountain gorilla species and 19 habituated gorilla groups which can be tracked from four sectors and each of these sectors have their own gorilla groups such as; Buhoma sector which has four habituated gorilla groups like; Rushegura, Mubare, Habinyanja and katwe. Rushaga sector has around eight habituated gorilla groups such as; Busingye, Mucugunzi, Bikyingi, Mishaya, Bweza, Rwingi, kahunge. More so, the Ruhija sector which has four-habituated gorilla groups, which include; Bitukura, Mukiza, Kyaguriro, Oruzogo and many more. Gorilla trekking activities can be done at any time of the year in Uganda however, during the dry season which is between months of June, August to September and from mid- December to February is always considered as the best time for one for involve themselves in gorilla trekking activities. Because during this period, there are less rains and the grass is short in the park, which enables tourists to get clear view of the endangered mountain gorilla species.
