TOUR OVERVIEW: 4 DAYS MAHALE NATIONAL PARK SAFARI
The secluded Mahale Mountains of Tanzania, with their forested peaks rising to 2,438 meters above the deep turquoise waters of Lake Tanganyika, just south of Jane Goodall’s Gombe Preserve, are the best location in the world to watch chimpanzees in the wild. One of Tanzania’s 1,613 km2 national parks, it is also one of the most difficult to access and one of the most distant and stunning.
Since there are no highways in the park, all of the trails that run through its glades and distances are only accessible to those who will walk them. The sun rises over the lake and sets behind the steep rise of mountains that rise up to 2,438 m at Nkungwe Peak. There are numerous trails and walkways that allow tourists to have very lovely forest strolls and have the chance to see some of the numerous species that call the higher woodlands, savannahs, and lowland forests home.
Your time with the chimpanzees will undoubtedly be the highlight of your visit. You have the chance to track them every day with knowledgeable trackers and guides in the breathtaking tropical rain forest. Once located, you have the privilege of witnessing their everyday activities, which include grooming, fighting, arguing, foraging, mothers playing with their kids, and babies playing with other babies. You get the chance to fish, dive, swim, and canoe after days of “chimp trekking.”
Along with the chimpanzees, this reserve is home to a variety of other animals, including red colobus monkeys, olive baboons, kudu, eland, buffalo, roan and sable antelope, and white-spot mangabeys. This is one of Africa’s most intriguing parks, dominated by the ominous Nkungwe Mountain and home to vegetation that spans practically the full range of African flora.
