Gombe is a well-known location for those seeking unique opportunities to observe chimpanzees. To see chimpanzees in the wild, you can go on a guided trip through the forest. The region contains deep valleys and a variety of forest types, including grassland, forest, and tropical rainforest.
Jane Goodall conducted her chimpanzee population research in the Gombe Stream National Park. As you stroll through the forest looking for a chimpanzee family, follow in her footsteps.
Once you’ve located the chimpanzees, you are free to view their daily routines, children playing, and mothers nursing their young. Enjoy these unique and personal glimpses into chimpanzee culture.
Gombe Stream National Park is home to chimpanzees as well as beachcomber olive baboons, red colobus, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, and vervet monkeys. Blue and red-tailed monkeys hybridize there as well. Along with bushpigs, the park is home to over 200 different bird species. Numerous reptile species, occasionally even hippos and leopards, can be seen.

While on your hikes through the Mahale Mountains National Park, you will spend some time looking for chimpanzees. Experienced and skilled guides lead the hikes. You have time to observe the local chimpanzee group once you’ve met them. The chimpanzees are not timid because they are accustomed to human visitors.
