Uwanda Game Reserve, also known as Uwanda Rukwa Game Reserve, is located in Rukwa valley in southwestern Tanzania. This beautiful reserve covers an area of about 4100 square kilometres and includes nearby half of lake Rukwa. Established in 1971, Uwanda Game Reserve is an extension of Katavi national park, making is a vital part of the local ecology. The reserve is known for its remarkable landscapes, ranging from grasslands to wetlands, which provides a home to various wildlife species.

 The wildlife in Uwanda Game Reserve is diverse and abundant. Visistors can encounter many wildlife including crocodiles and hippos; and fish species such as tilapia and mudfish. The shores of the lake attract game such as elephant, buffalo, zebra, topi, puku, eland and kudu. Other animals: Antelopes, giraffes, reedbucks, and leopards. And over 400 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve. Some of which include red sharks, woodpeckers, grey parrots, pelicans, lesser flamingo and the African skimmer. The rare shoebill is often spotted in the swampy papyrus surrounding the lake. These animals roam freely, making it a great spot for wildlife watching. The wetlands around Lake Rukwa are especially important, as they attract many animals looking for water. During the dry season, large herds of animals gather near the lake, offering an incredible sight for visitors

The main highlight of visiting the area is to spot the unique of species within the reserve. This is one of the few places where visitors can see albino giraffe, crocodiles breeding, and plagues of red locusts. The red locusts attract thousands upon thousands of rare birds, both endemic and migratory.

The best time to visit Uwanda Game Reserve

 The best tie to visit Uwanda Game Reserve is during the dry season, which typically runs from June to October. During these months, the weather is generally cooler and drier, making it easier to spot wildlife as animals gather around the water sources such as lake Rukwa. The vegetation is less dense, enhancing visibility for game drives and wildlife viewing.

Another good time to visit the reserve is during the shoulder months of May and November. While there may still be sone rain, these months offer a chance to see lush landscape and a variety of migratory bird, making it a greater time for birdwatching.

The wet season, from December to April, brings heavier rainfall, which can make some areas harder to access. However, this is the best time when many animals give birth, so visitors might witness young wildlife during this period. Overall, for the best wildlife experience, the dry season is highly recommended.
